Spooks and Silurians

Moody SkiesSounds like an episode of Doctor Who? But it’s all to be found at the top of Caerau Hill, where the remains of a bronze-age hill fort have been discovered. Here was the heritage of Cardiff formed, as the tribe of Silures was finally absorbed into the invading Roman population after three decades of hostilities. Perhaps this accounts for something of the intractable fighting spirit of South East Wales. Adding to the otherworldly atmosphere is the ruin of the medieval church of St. Mary’s, complete with overgrown gravestones for a bit of spooky fun. If you arrive in the summer, you might even catch the massive Ely Festival nearby, where locals descend en masse for a rather raucous carnival.
